Match Preview

Portugal will visit Bak? Olimpiya Stadionu, Azerbaijan's headquarters in the 6th match of the 2022 World Cup Qualification in the European Zone Group A, Tuesday (07/09/2021) at 9:30 p.m. Indian time.

Portugal is currently in second place in Group A's standings with 10 points from 4 matches (W3 D1 L0).

In the previous match, Portugal was able to pick a dramatic 2-1 victory over the Republic of Ireland. Disadvantaged 0-1 earlier than the Republic of Ireland in the first half, Portugal was finally able to reverse the position before the match was over through  Cristiano Ronaldo's brace in the 89th and 90+6 minutes.

Unfortunately, Portugal's victory over the Republic of Ireland was slightly tarnished by the imposition of a yellow card against Ronaldo which made him unable to appear in this match due to the accumulation of yellow cards. This was obtained after Ronaldo took off his shirt while celebrating.

After facing the Republic of Ireland, Portugal was also able to perform nicely in their win over Qatar last weekend. Without Ronaldo,  A Seleção was able to win 3-1 through goals from Andre Silva, Otavio, and Bruno Fernandes. This victory will certainly increase the confidence of the Portuguese players ahead of this match against Azerbaijan.

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan in the previous match was only able to draw 1-1 against the Republic of Ireland. Azerbaijan was able to open the scoring first through Emin Mahmudov's goal in the 45+1 minute, but unfortunately, the victory in sight had to be lost after Shane Duffy equalized in the 87th minute.

With these results, Azerbaijan has still trapped at the bottom of the group A standings with 1 point from 4 matches (W0 D1 L3).

At the previous meeting in the first match of the 2022 World Cup Qualification which took place at the Allianz Stadium, Portugal struggled to win over Azerbaijan with a score of 1-0. The only goal in this match was scored by an own goal by Maksim Medvedev in the 37th minute.

In terms of quality, Portugal will of course be much more favored over Azerbaijan in this match. Moreover, Portugal has never lost to Azerbaijan in 7 meetings (W6 D1 L0).

However, Portugal still has to be vigilant considering this match takes place at the Azerbaijan headquarters. The full support of the fans present will of course make Azerbaijan players more confident in this match.
